The sheer enchantment and absurdity of Coel’s first TV series, Chewing Gum, a saga about a virgin’s voyage into the kingdom of sex, won her BAFTAs and a fan base and introduced her as a creator who could be trusted with big ideas. “It feels like a performance, and that’s what it is, isn’t it?
